Oh, My Aching Joints!
One of the things that I hear from my patients almost daily is, "Oh boy, am I stiff. I just dread getting out of bed in the morning!"
Waking up with aching joints is one of the many signs of aging. At least 80 percent of people over the age of 50 experience some joint pain-that's about 12 percent of the U.S. population. I am among that group. I suffer from osteoarthritis as a result of high school and college athletics.
Osteoarthritis is when the cartilage that cushions your joints wears away, allowing bones to rub together. In my own case, I lost an inch of height because the cartilage between two of my vertebrae disappeared completely. I saw two orthopedic surgeons in the last decade, and both wanted to operate on my back.
The first thing I did was lose some weight, and I'd encourage you to do the same if you are overweight and suffering with joint pain. According to the Johns Hopkins Arthritic Center, even 10 extra pounds can place a significant strain on arthritic joints that they can definitely do without! I see this in my patients all the time. In fact, the worst hip and knee problems I see are in folks who are overweight.
